What should students learn by the end of your course?  How will they learn and how will they know they learned what they should are key questions instructors need to answer for themselves and for their students.  This workshop will introduce the idea of Backward Course Design and essential components to design an effective learning environment.  Participants will create measurable learning objectives, outline lessons to address these objectives, and learn about tools to assess student learning. Creating a Teaching Statement and Portfolio

Participants will assess their own teaching style and be able to communicate important aspects to a search committee via a teaching statement.  During this workshop, participants will learn how to prepare a competitive application package for teaching-oriented careers. Participants will work through several activities to communicate how they conceptualize learning, how they envision their teaching style and how to align claims made about teaching with documentation in a teaching portfolio.
